Let’s get this show on the road! Sep 01

I’m so excited! I’ve just signed my contract with Cable 12 to broadcast Nu Face Model Search! I had to call my best friend, Sue on the way home to tell her the exciting news. So much work went into getting this show on the road, from a small suggestion to getting major sponsors behind us (Bahamas Ferries, Sky Bahamas, Valentines Resort and Marina, Bandolera, Babalu, Splashdance, KJO crochet designs, pelican Bay Hotel…….and the list goes on) to all the efforts that went into this production by my team and family and friends; this was indeed a labour of love, and the work is still being done. Just today, Charles and worked extremely hard….many thanks to Charles Kemp.

But to actually sign the contract, wow! Now, I know we are on the way. The show will be airing next week Wednesday, September 8th at 8pm on Cable 12, and every Wednesday at the same time for about eight (8) weeks. There will be one re-broadcast possibly on Saturday around 7:30pm. The times and days for the re-broadcast are not set in stone. You will have to stay updated by checking the website and the Nu Woman Magazine’s facebook page- http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nu-Woman-Magazine/21350463557

I believe that when we allow our lives to unfold naturally, everything falls into place. I strongly believe in Karma, in Tao in the power of the ever-living God, and I believe that if we honestly follow our dreams with effort, faith and with a steadfast will, they will come true.

Here is a portion of my favourite quote from the ‘Tao Te Ching’, I’ve memorized this verse:

“Live in accordance with the nature of things:

Build your house on solid ground

Keep your mind still

When giving, be kind

When speaking, be truthful

When ruling, be just

When working, be one-pointed

When acting, remember- timing is everything.”

Reflection Aug 16

Today, I am looking back at the road I’ve traveled with Nu Woman Magazine. I remember three years ago when I released the first issue of Nu Woman Magazine in the summer of 2007. I was so excited! Then the magazine arrived and there were sooo many mistakes with the layout; I wanted to run and hide. A very good friend told me that I should be proud, that despite the mistakes I had put considerable effort into getting this issue out there, and that he would not allow me to sit at home to hide, so we got dressed up and went out on the town.

Now, three years later I can see the growth of this magazine. We have gone from having three and four contributors to having contributors from all around the globe writing stories, sending pictures etc. Just last week, I added another contributor who will be keeping us updated with the various fashion trends on the runway- http://stylebynina.com/

I am so grateful for all the support that I’ve been getting from all over. This magazine has been a labour of love, and I hope it continues to put stories, interviews and editorial pieces out there that showcase Caribbean people, events; stories that both educate and inspire not just Caribbean people but anyone who happen to come across an issue.

I would also like to say congratulations to Davia Chambers, our Winter/ Spring cover model who was recently crowned Miss World Trinidad & Tobago.

Davia was photographed by Lyndah Wells last November for the cover of Nu Woman Magazine. See cover photo and article below.

Nu Face Finale! And the winner is… Aug 08

Last night we announced the Nu Face Model Search winner at Babalu Caribbean bar and Grill. Gem Burrows walked away with the title and the Summer/ Autumn cover. It was great to finally see a dream realized.

It has been a loong hard road getting to the finale. We had limited funds and in many instances we simply ‘played it by ear’, but thanks to the help of many sponsors (Bahamas Ferries, Sky Bahamas, Valentines Resort & Marina, Pelican Bay Hotel, Splashdance, Catwalk Boutique, KJO Crochet Designs, Babalu Caribbean Bar and Grill, The Daily Grind, Bandolera, Bani Shoe Warehouse, The Curiosity Shop, Hair International Salon & Day Spa, Brynda Knowles, Eye Candy, The Down Home Group) and our wonderful team of photographers (Dwayne Delancy, Lyndah Wells and Phillippa Michel), writers, graphic designers (and special thanks go to my copy editor, Tanya Simmons and producer, Charles Kemp), we got through this campaign.

The model search started on a whim. I had intended to simply do a photo shoot on an island and had approached Bahamas Ferries for sponsorship for tickets. I was lucky enough to sit down and talk with Mr. Khaalis Rolle, who planted the seed of the island-wide model search, and offered help and suggestions on how to go about it. Still skeptical, I started the campaign knowing that funds were limited but with great hope that all the suggested help and sponsorship would come through.

Many of the sponsorship did not come through, but enough sponsorship did come through and we improvised the rest of the way. In many instances people went unpaid and worked with the hope of a pending payday. This campaign has taught me humility and has reinforced my faith in God, in the power of positive thoughts and in people on the whole.

Our models all did a great job, and got along well. There were a few bumps here and there, but everything worked out.

Charles and I are still editing the series, but will be airing a few shows in a few weeks on Cable 12.  So check our facebook page to stay updated!

Below are a few photos from the finale; the others are posted on Nu Woman Magazine’s facebook page.

Executive Decisions May 24

The Nu Woman team had planned to go to Fresh Creek, Andros this coming Wednesday to hold a casting call for Andros models, followed by a photo shoot the following day. The hotel has been booked and the tickets provided by Bahamas Ferries, only two problems-

1. There have not been enough entries for the casting to validate taking an entire team (cameramen, make-up artist, hair stylist, photographer, production manager etc) to Andros. The cost of this trip will be too expensive and the limited amount of entrants would make this trip a ‘bust’.

2. Due to the fact that the trip will be in the middle of the week, there will be too much juggling around of persons ( the make-up artist would have to be flown in on another day, these expenses would have been out of pocket), the production assistant and stylist will be leaving earlier than planned.

So I’ve made an executive decision to cancel this trip to my hometown until the next season. It will give us a chance to get better organized, and also give me a chance to catch up on my living expenses.

No one every tells you how much goes into making a reality series, and throw in the production of a magazine; this could cause any normal person to blow a socket. Thank goodness, I’ve learnt to ‘roll with the punches’ and have learned to better manage pressure and deadlines.

I’ve made many phone calls today to the applicants and organizers I had in Andros, and even though they are disappointed, they understand and look forward to the next season of the show.

Right now, I need to get down to business in getting the summer issue ready for print, and working along with the producer in putting the show together, not to mention following through to all my obligations to the various sponsors, without them, and the grace of Yahweh, this show would not be possible.

Look for “Nu Face Model Search” reality show airing this July on Cable 12!

WORKAHOLIC Apr 22

Every one wants to be successful at something or other; everyone wants some sort of recognition or to be acknowledged.

Lately, I’ve been working all the time on this Model Search. It’s gotten to the point where it has consumed all my free time, and affecting my personal relationships, but I’ve come this far and have to continually move forward. I know that I’m ambitious, always have been. I want to succeed at what I do, make a difference in my world, and yes, sometimes I do work too much.

I admit that I’m a ‘workaholic’, but I am not going to remain this way. I’m working to achieve a better balance in my life, and this involves so much.

The model search is coming along. Monies are tight, but sometimes you just need faith, good friends, great connections and yes, determination. My quest to complete this search, my show, to get a new issue out is teaching me so much this time around. I’m praying a lot, and leaning on the wisdom of others; it’s teaching me patience, and the so many life lessons. So yes, I admit, I am a workaholic, but I am also a work in progress.

Our next stop is in Freeport, May 1 & 2 at the Pelican Bay Hotel, where we will do yet another casting call, and photo shoot. Even though I’m tired, I’m enthused about the completion of this project. Had I know how much it would entail at the beginning, I might have thought twice, but knowing my optimistic nature, I would have still pushed myself forward.

Update on Nu Face Model search/Harbour Is Apr 15

My cousin emailed me the other day to tell me that this blog was sooo far behind, so at 4:35 am in the morning I’m attempting to update it.

On April 3, 2010 we had our final casting in Nassau at Babalu Caribbean Bar and Grill. From this casting call we picked four models; Khalil Rhaming, Alluyious Kemp, Sasha Anderson and Letisha Neymour. These models would accompany us to Harbour Island and Eleuthera for a photo shoot with the models that we would choose from Harbour Island.

Yesterday morning we arrived in Harbour Island on Bahamas Ferries (one of our major sponsors) and hosted another casting call at Valentines Resort and Marina. From this casting call we selected two female models.

Our team of twelve persons is split between two places, Valentines Resort and Marina and Tingum Village. This morning we will head to  North Eleuthera to do a photo shoot, and this evening and tomorrow another photo shoot in Harbour Is. I will post some pictures on our return from North Eleuthera.

In a few minutes, I’ll be making preparations for the trip. On our team with us are Scherlin Major (sytlist), Phillippa Michel (photographer), Charles Kemp and Leon Clarke (cameramen), the models, Italia Williams, who will join us later this morning (make-up artist), Lyndah Wells, who will join us tomorrow (photographer), Sonia Brown (production assistant) and myself (producer, publisher).

Today we shot in North Eleuthera at the Glass Window Bridge, totally awesome! There was a bit of drama, but I think that drama brought out the best in pictures. Our stylist Scherlin had permed, rinsed and weaved Gem’s hair, a great hairdo we thought. Somewhere between leaving Valentines Resort and the shoot, Gem had decided to alter her style slightly…drama. But it all worked out. Did a few behind the scenes photos, but camera and computer aren’t in sync, so will have to wait until I get home to download.

1st Casting Call at Babalu’s Caribbean Bar & Grill Mar 25

Yesterday, we had our first official casting call in Nassau at Babalu Caribbean Bar and Grill. It started off slow but then applicants came in. Many had come to the pre-screening the night before and were fully prepared and eager to be filmed. I was pleased with the quality of models that did come.

Later on that evening we had a second casting, and while we were casting we had a few walk-ins who had heard about the contest last minute and wanted to be a part of it. I gave the interested parties applications and assured them that we would have a second casting.

So yes, I initially only wanted one casting in Nassau, but now because of the volume of late applicants we will have a second casting Wednesday, March 31st from 11am-2pm.  Followed by the finals in Nassau, Saturday, April 3rd.  We then return to Harbour Island to ‘wrap-up’ casting and photo shoots April, 14th, 15th & 16th.

Pre-Screening Mar 24

11:53

Last week Wednesday, we travelled to Harbour Island and did our first Pre-Screening Event. Initially we were supposed to scout out locations in Eleuthera, but that did not exactly work out. So we ended up interviewing potential models for the search and reality show.

Tonight in Nassau, we hosted our first Pre-Screening Event at it was a decent turn out. We interviewed more contestants at Babalu Caribbean Bar and Grill. A few contestants did not show, and at 9:30 pm some were still sending their photos and stats online for me to have a look at. I did send a few replies, and added them to the casting call list tomorrow. It will be interesting to see who shows up in the morning.

I’m still getting used to the camera, and Charles my cameraman assures me that I’m getting better…I’m not sure, but I’ll trust him on this. I’ll catch some ZZZzzz’s and be up bright and early for casting in the morning. I think that we did a great job. Thanks Sonia and Charles. Thanks Chef Osborne from Babalu’s for preparing such goodies for us to eat. See you tomorrow!

Nu Face 4 Summer Mar 07

It seems like it’s been forever since I’ve written in my blog. I’m happy to say that the Winter/Spring 2010 issue was a smashing hit! Rave reviews…so happy. It’s good to know that hard work actually pays off.

On another note, Nu Woman Magazine is launching and island-wide model search for the ‘Nu Face 4 Summer’. We are conducting casting calls in Andros, Eleuthera/Harbour Is, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Nassau in search of models. This is a huge undertaking, and it’s proving a great deal of work, but then this is not new to me or my team.

I think that this will be most exciting and will keep you updated on the progress of this campaign. The first casting call will be held March 24th in Nassau.
